But in returning home, Edelgard and her siblings were imprisoned in the deepest dungeons of the Empire and subjected to torture and experimentation by the Agarthans, one day to be known as Those Who Slither in the Dark. As the lone survivor of their experimentation, Edelgard was successfully given a second Crest: the Crest of Flames. The trauma of it left her scarred and with silver hair, where she once had brown. The experience was excruciating, many of her memories being suppressed of her childhood and some of the circumstances around these years. Duke Aegir took control of the Emperor's power; the Agarthans acted as a knife hanging above Edelgard's head, using her as a weapon for their own ends.
Her faith shaken but not her resolve, Edelgard vowed to prevent this from ever happening to anyone else. She attended the Officer's Academy at the age of 17 and spent the year preparing for an eventual declaration of war against the Church of Seiros, where she would upend the ruling class and the system that used Crests for despicable means, exposing the Church for its lies, and being prepared to bring about a new world order where people could rise up based on merit and where the noble classes (and Crests) would have no bearing on the might and power of the people.
Edelgard's war continued for five years with the aid of Byleth, her professor, and the Black Eagles Strike Force, a group of her classmates who chose to remain by her side.
